17 NETFLIX UPCOMING ORIGINALS| FIRST LOOK REVIEW

Hello fellow binge watchers!

Netflix just dropped a kickass trailer with an announcement of 17 new shows. It is an exciting and diverse line up. Mostly something for everyone. And if you anything like me, everything for someone!

Giving them Cutting Rating based on my eagerness to watch it

Lets have a quick look shall we?

1. A Suitable Boy (Series)

Directed by Mira Nair and  based on Vikram Seth’s novel of the same name. it is a tale of four families. With a unusual duo of Ishaan Khatter and Tabu in the lead, this has been a much awaited release. Oh and it also has the fresh face of Tanya Maniktala who was last saw in TVF’s Flames.

Cutting Rating 4/5

2. AK vs AK (Film)

A dark comedy where a director kidnaps a movie star’s daughter and then films the whole thing. This concept and cast looks bizarre.  Can we appreciate Anurag Kashyap on the wrong side of the camera for an entire feature length?

Cutting Rating 2.5/5

3. Bhaag Beanie Bhaag (Series)

Starring Varun Thakur and Swara Bhaskar in, the story revolves around Beanie who is set to follow her lifelong dream of becoming a stand up artist. Stand up is tricky and bad jokes can be worse than absence of jokes.

Cutting Rating 2/5

4. Bombay Begums (Series)

Directed by  Alankrita Shrivastava of Lipstick under my Burkha fame, it is a story about women of different generations shattering the glass ceiling. Bringing back Pooja bhatt and strong actors like Shahana Goswami and Amruta Subhash this looks authentic. Also women telling women stories gives hope.

Cutting – 3 on 5

5. Bombay Rose (Film)

Animated film by Gitanjli Rao explores the interlinked stories of a pair of flower sellers and a former background dancer in films. When was the last time you watched a good hindi animated film?

3 on 5

6. Class of ’83 (Film)

Starring A comeback we never asked for

Again based on a book of the same name, it profiles the members of the 1983 batch of  Poli training graduates who went on to become “encounter specialists”. I would have never pay to watch this on screen. But for Netflix…I might just might put myself through this.

Cutting  – 2 on 5

7. Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare (Film)

Another one by Alankrita Shrivastava, with string females leads.  It chronicles the journey of small towners and their big city dreams. I just hope it stays away from clichés  It also has Vikrant Massey and Amol Parashar in supporting cast.

Cutting 3 on 5

8. Ginny Weds Sunny (Film)

With a very Sonu Titu like name  I am sure this will be set in Delhi. We have seen a lot middle class Delhi based comedy with Luv Ranjan and with Ayushman. Will this be anything new?

2 on 5

9. Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl (Film)

Ever since the first look came out, it had Nepotism written all over it. It stands to be looked through a brutal lens of criticism especially for Janhavi Kapoor. My money is on Pankj Tripathi

Cutting Rating 2.5 on 5

10. Ludo (Film)

An anthology comedy by Anurag Basu with an ensemble starcast of Abhishek A. Bachchan, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Sanya Malhotra, Fatima Sana Shaikh and more. Star studded films do not guarantee success. But Lets see what this one has in store for us.

Cutting – 3 on 5

11. Masaba Masaba (Series)

A webs series based on the real life of this famous Mother – daughter duo. Not quite sure of the entertainment value in their not so secret lives.

Cutting 1.5  on 5

12. Mismatched (Series)

Based on the novel ‘When Dimple Met Rishi’. The famous Youtuber mostly sane aka Prajakta Koli makes her Netflix debut with this one opposite Rohit saraf.  Will she be any different than her multiple characters on Yotube?

Cutting  – 2.5 on 5

13. Raat Akeli Hai (Film)

Netflix’s favourite Radhika Apte is back and so in Nawazuddin. It follows a misfit cop’s investigation in a murder mystery. Since Sacred Games is not happening, this gives some hope.

Going with 4 on 5 for this

14. Serious Men (Film)

Directed by Sudhir Mishra it is an adaptation of  Manu Joseph’s novel of the same name. A Rags to riches story starring Nawazuddin again alongside, Shweta Basu Prasad .

2.5 on 5 rating on eagerness to watch

15. Torbaaz (Film)

Another comeback no one asked for, or did we?

Starring Sanjay Dutt and Nargis Fakri it is about child suicide bombers in Afghanistan. Nope. Not a fan

1.5/5

16. Tribhanga- Tedhi Medhi Crazy (Film)

Renuka Shahne is making her directorial debut for Hindi with this one. Starring Kajol, Mithila Palkar and Tanvi Azmi in the lead roles. Another all women gang to watch out for.

2.5 on 5 for this

17. Kaali Khuhi (Film)

Last but not the least, it is a story set in a village of Punjab. Dealing with the heavy subject of female infanticide that too through the lens of a 10 year old girl. Starring Shabana Azmi in the lead, this sounds like it should not be missed.

Cutting Rating 3.5 on 5

That’s the end of a long and exciting list. Tell in the comments below which one are you most excited to watch?
